How it is made

How is an acrylic portrait made, from photo to wall?

You upload a photo and Tedooo technology draws the portrait in about a minute, free, with no card needed. You approve the design. Then, in our studio, the portrait is cut in glossy glass, shaped into a relief, lettered if you asked for a name, sealed in clear acrylic, polished and fitted with four corner standoffs.

The studio bench under a window: three finished acrylic portraits leaning against the wall, a tuxedo cat, a French bulldog and a cavalier spaniel, and in front of them a folded polishing cloth, a wooden tray of brass standoffs, a hex key, a roll of film and a sheet of acrylic with its blue film half peeled

What happens when I upload a photo?

Tedooo technology reads the photograph and draws the portrait as a cut-glass design, usually in about a minute. Nothing is charged and no card is needed: the drawing is free until you approve one.

The drawing works through the photo in stages: it reads the face, the eyes most of all, then draws the glass, then the relief, then any name or line you added, then the acrylic. If the result is not right, alter the name or the photo and redraw; repeats are unlimited and free. The photo guide says what to send and why.

What am I approving?

The design on screen is what gets made. You approve it before you pay, and the approved design is the one we cut, so there is no later proof to wait for.

Once the order clears, we lay the design beside your photograph and compare them before the cutting begins. If after a few tries it is still not there, write that in the box on the create page; one of us gets back to you that day. Checkout is the first moment anything is charged, and cutting waits for the order to clear.

How is the glass cut and shaped?

The portrait is cut in glossy glass and built up into a relief, piece by piece, with the eyes shaped last. The relief is what gives the face its depth and its own small shadow.

  1. Drawn: Tedooo turns your photo into a design, in around a minute.
  2. Approved: you say yes on screen, then check out through Tedooo.
  3. Checked: the design is compared with your photograph before the first cut.
  4. Cut: the portrait is cut in glossy glass.
  5. Shaped: the pieces are built into a relief, the eyes last.
  6. Lettered: a name or a line, if you added one, is set under the portrait in raised lettering.
  7. Sealed and polished: the relief is sealed in clear acrylic and the edges are polished last.
  8. Fitted and packed: four corner standoffs go on, the corners are protected, and it ships tracked.

How is it sealed and finished?

The relief is sealed inside a crystal-clear acrylic frame, and the edges are polished last, so the four sides of the block are as clear as the face of it.

Then the four corner standoffs are fitted. They are what the piece hangs from, and they hold it a little off the wall so the light goes straight through the acrylic. The materials and process page sets out each part and what is not in it.

How does it get to me?

It leaves our studio in a box with corner guards and a tracking number. Most addresses see it inside five weeks or so, door to door, and the estimate for yours is on the page before you pay.

The piece arrives ready to hang on its standoffs. Delivery and any customs duties for the address are totted up at checkout. If it is a gift, give the recipient's address at checkout and it ships to their door, not yours. The lead-time guide breaks the five weeks down.

Questions this leaves

Who draws the design, and who makes the piece?

Tedooo technology draws it: the technology behind each custom listing on the Tedooo marketplace. We make it: the portrait is cut in glass and sealed in clear acrylic in our studio, and we lay the design beside your photograph and compare them before the cutting begins. We sell through Tedooo as well.

Can I change the design after I have approved it?

Before you check out, yes: alter the name or the photo and redraw; repeats are unlimited and free. After the order clears, the approved design is what we make. If you spot something straight after ordering, write to us; a human reads it and replies, normally within the day.

What happens to my photograph?

Drawing your piece is the only thing it is used for, and checking the design against it before the first cut. It is not passed on, not posted anywhere, not fed to any model, and we remove it the day the order closes.
