Which size should I choose: 30 × 30 or 50 × 50 cm?

An Acrylune portrait is offered as a 30 × 30 or a 50 × 50 cm square. The 30 belongs in a corridor, on a bookshelf or beside a staircase; the 50 takes charge of the wall over a settee or dresser. Portraits start from $149 at 30 cm, and the price for your size is shown before you pay.

What sizes does it come in?

Two, each square: 30 cm on a side or 50 cm on a side. The cut glass and the clear acrylic frame on four corner standoffs are identical at both.

The two are the same piece at two scales, not a small version and a large one: the same cut glass in relief, the same clear acrylic with polished edges, the same four corner standoffs holding it a little off the wall. What changes is how far away it reads from, and what it hangs over.

Where does the 30 cm suit?

A corridor, a bookshelf or the wall beside a staircase: anywhere it is seen from close to, or stands rather than hangs.

At 30 cm the portrait is read at arm's length, which suits a passage you walk down every day. It is also the size for a shelf, where a piece stands rather than hangs. Think of the tuxedo cat above the home-office desk in our photographs: one piece, one wall, read from a chair, and the kind of setting the smaller size is for.

Where does the 50 cm suit?

Above a sofa or a sideboard, where it is seen from across the room and has furniture under it to answer.

At 50 cm the relief is large enough that the shadow it throws reads from the doorway, and the clear frame holds its own over a long piece of furniture. The living room photograph at the top of this guide is that setting: a calico cat above a walnut sideboard, pampas grass beside it, a sofa to the left. The hanging guide covers which wall and what light.

Does the price change with the size?

Yes. Portraits start from $149 at 30 cm; pick the 50 cm on the create page and its price is shown beside it before you pay.

The prices are live, so the figure on the page is the one you are charged, and shipping and any duties are added at checkout. You are not charged until you check out, and the glass is not cut until the order clears. Start on the create page and the size picker shows both, each with its live price, so the choice is made with the figure in front of you rather than from a list.

Does the size change what goes on it?

No. Either size can carry lettering under the portrait, a name no longer than 20 characters or a quote no longer than 80, and either can be a quote panel on its own.

A quote sits under the portrait on two or three centred lines at both sizes. Two or three subjects close together are drawn into the same square at either size, so the create page shows you what you will get before you choose, and the price for each size beside it. The guide to names and quotes compares the options.

Questions this leaves

Is there a size between the two?

No. It comes 30 × 30 or 50 × 50 cm, and that is the whole range. If you are unsure, measure the wall or the shelf and hold a square of paper at each size against it; the difference is bigger in the room than on screen.

Which size for a gift?

The 30 cm is the one that stands on a shelf, so it suits a recipient whose walls you do not know. The 50 cm is for a wall you have seen, above a sofa or a sideboard. Both are made to order and reach most addresses in about five weeks.

Does the delivery time differ by size?

The estimate for the piece you have chosen is shown before you pay, so pick the size and read the figure beside it. Both are made in our studio and tracked end to end.
